Easton

Easton’s journey began when he was born at 36 weeks old. After trying to come into this world at 32 weeks, Easton finally arrived at 36 weeks. Doctors and providers mentioned he had overlapping plates in his head due to prematurity. Being a pediatric speech therapist, I had some clients with craniosynostosis and knew in my gut, something was not right. After visiting our pediatrician and undergoing several tests, Easton was diagnosed with sagittal craniosynostosis, around 8 weeks of age! We quickly were referred to a cranio team in which we met to discuss surgery options! We knew Easton’s condition could be managed and with the help of the cranio team, the decision was made for Easton to undergo an endoscopic strip craniectomy, a less invasive surgical procedure that removes the fused suture and allows for the skull to grow properly. To further ensure his skull shape would develop correctly, doctors placed springs to gently expand the skull over time. This procedure is often recommended for babies under six months old, as their bones are still soft and healing is quicker. The surgery was a success. Easton’s recovery was closely monitored, and we were amazed at how quickly he started to improve not only from his head shape standpoint, but developmentally as well. The springs were gradually adjusted, and over the following months, Easton’s head shape began to normalize. 3 months following his initial surgery, he had a second outpatient procedure in which they removed the cranial springs. He has since reached all developmental milestones on time and exceeded expectations in many areas. Now, almost 2 years later, Easton is thriving. His head shape is corrected, and his cognitive and motor skills are on track with his peers. We are are grateful for his amazing team , the quick diagnosis  & successful surgery treatment that allowed him to have a healthy start to life. We often reflect on how Easton’s journey with sagittal craniosynostosis and how was challenging and scary it was at first, but also reflect on how we are so grateful to have dealt with a medical condition that could be easily treated & managed.
